200 Sponge Cakes Later – the New Outdoor Oven is Finally Ready for the Market!

In his basement workshop in Stockholm, outdoor chef and cookbook author Eric Tornblad has developed a compact outdoor oven that can be used in conjunction with your camping stove. Interest has been high, and the beta version sold out immediately. The next step is to fund production through crowdfunding.

– ”I’ve been cooking, developing recipes, and teaching outdoor cooking for over fifteen years, and I know I’m not the only one who’s missed having a proper oven. Eventually, I decided to just develop one myself,” says Eric Tornblad.

The portable ovens available on the market today are either Dutch ovens, heavy cast-iron field ovens that are bulky and difficult to carry on hikes, or various types of camping ovens where heat is distributed through a large hole in the center, limiting the cooking surface and making it impossible to bake a classic pizza.

– ”It might sound trivial, but one of the things I’ve always dreamed of is being able to make a really good pizza with a crispy base. The trick is getting the heat where you want it and achieving a good balance between the top and bottom heat without compromising on design and shape,” says Eric Tornblad.

To solve this challenge, he teamed up with experienced product designer Emil Karbing, who has over 20 years of experience and has worked with companies like DeLaval, Dometic, and Saab. In their Kärrtorp basement workshop, they put their heads together, and during the process, they baked over 200 sponge cakes. The result was the HAJKA outdoor oven, which weighs around 1000 grams and measures 6 cm high and 23 cm in diameter when packed in its bag. Perfect for a hiking backpack, in other words.

This autumn (2024), a beta version of the oven was produced in 100 units, and the suspicion that many others were missing this product proved correct. The ovens sold out immediately and will soon be landing in the hands of their new owners. The next step is to launch a Kickstarter campaign in mid-November, with the goal of raising 250,000 SEK to begin full production. Eric Tornblad is excited and hopeful that the goal will be met, but most of all, he can’t wait to see the oven in the hands of other outdoor enthusiasts.

– ”This is just the beginning like I’m providing the pen and a blank sheet of paper. Now I’m really curious to see what kind of food people will cook in the oven!”
